Servaas is one of the few actuaries who are really living abroad. After starting his career in the Netherlands, he moved to Ireland in 2008 where he later met his wife from Trinidad. He then moved to London to get exposure to the most advanced insurance market in the world.
Servaas specialises in Solvency II and has worked all the way from the QIS calculations to methodology projects. His international career has given him exposure to different insurance regulatory regimes and different cultures.
Apart from finishing his actuarial exams, Servaas is a CFA and FRM charterholder (he is wary of meeting actuaries both during and after work). He publishes articles frequently for actuarial magazines and actuarial student societies. His love for writing is such that as per November 2011 he uses his weekend and evening spare time to summarise articles for CFA digest.
Servaas is not a quitter who dashes off when issues arise shown by his commitment to his studies and having an international career (which is still uncommon in the actuarial profession). The only part of his life he has thrown in the towel is on European winters when he decides to escape the cold and head to the Caribbean.
